“Crime on the Gulf” is the story of Gary Duncan, a black teenager from the parish of Plaquemines, a swampy strip of land south of New Orleans. In 1966, Duncan tries to break the argument between white and black teenagers outside the newly integrated school. He gently places his hand on the white boy’s arm. The boy recoils like a snake. That night, the police broke into Duncan’s trailer and arrested him for assaulting a minor. Young Jewish lawyer Richard Sobol leaves his prestigious firm in the District of Columbia to volunteer in New Orleans. With it, Duncan bravely confronts a racist legal system backed by a white supremacist boss to challenge his unjust arrest. Their fight reaches the U.S. Supreme Court, and their lifelong friendship is forged.
