Victor Hugo’s monumental novel “Les Miserables” has been filmed so often that it is sometimes difficult to distinguish one version from another. One of the best and most accurate adaptations is this 240-minute French production starring Jean Gabin as the beleaguered Jean Valjean. Arrested for a petty crime, Valjean spends 20 years in the brutal French penitentiary system. Even after his release, he is pursued on the trail by the relentless Inspector Javert. Valjean’s attempts to create a new life for himself, despite Javert’s ubiquity, are meticulously described in this film, which uses several episodes from Hugo’s original that have never been dramatized until now. Originally released as a standalone film, Les Misérables was usually offered as a two-part film outside of France.
